Athletes Hangar transforms the former Avonair Curling Club into a 25,000-square-foot high-performance training, rehabilitation, and wellness destination. The project reimagines an underutilized recreational facility as a contemporary sports environment, bringing together athletic development, recovery services, and sports medicine under one roof.
The design celebrates the building’s existing character by retaining the original exposed wood truss roof structure. Rather than concealing the building’s history, the renovation embraces it, pairing the warmth and craftsmanship of the timber structure with modern training environments, recovery facilities, and sports performance spaces.
A comprehensive exterior renewal establishes a bold new identity for the facility through a contemporary façade upgrade and integrated branding. The revitalized exterior creates a strong community presence while clearly expressing the building’s new purpose as a destination for athletic performance and wellness.
Inside, the facility integrates a sports rehabilitation clinic, recovery centre, strength and conditioning spaces, and indoor turf training fields into a cohesive environment that supports athletes at every stage of their journey. Direct connections between treatment, recovery, and training spaces promote a seamless progression from rehabilitation to performance, while flexible indoor sports areas accommodate team training, individual development, and community programming.
By adapting an existing recreational landmark rather than building new, Athletes Hangar demonstrates how thoughtful reuse can extend the life of community infrastructure while creating a modern, high-performance environment for athletes of all levels.
