King Thunderbird Centre

The King Thunderbird Centre is a transformative adaptive reuse project that reimagines an existing commercial building as a culturally grounded community hub for Boyle Street Community Services. Rather than replacing the structure, the design embraces the opportunity to breathe new life into the building, transforming it into a welcoming, contemporary environment that reflects resilience, healing, and connection.

HSEA worked closely with Boyle Street Community Services, Elders, staff, Indigenous knowledge keepers, and community members to reshape the existing facility into a highly functional and flexible space that supports a diverse range of programs and services. The architectural intervention balances the realities of working within an existing structure with the opportunity to create a renewed identity – one that is open, accessible, and deeply connected to the organization’s mission.

The design introduces a warm and inviting material palette, improved natural daylight, intuitive circulation, and carefully considered gathering spaces that encourage community while providing opportunities for privacy and reflection. Existing building constraints were thoughtfully leveraged to create efficient program adjacencies and adaptable spaces capable of evolving alongside the organization’s future needs. The renewed exterior establishes a recognizable civic presence, reflecting the Centre’s importance as a place of welcome, support, and belonging within the community.

King Thunderbird Centre demonstrates how adaptive reuse can extend beyond sustainability to become a powerful tool for social impact – transforming an existing building into a meaningful destination that honours culture, strengthens community, and provides lasting value for generations to come.
